I will always have my triggers and memories that can’t be erased. Randis: I don’t think anyone who lives in a house where there is abuse walks away unscathed, myself included. Do you consider her to be a victim as well? Molly’s selfishness throughout Brooke’s life is somewhat appalling.What’s more interesting is to go back and re-read journal entries from when I was younger now that I am an adult, only because you can tell how “normal” everything was for me based on the tone and language I used. I often wrote about the ongoings of my household: the lack of food, abuse, screaming. What did Molly read in the journal that elicited this response? After reading Brooke’s journal, her mother makes a promise to try to help her. When Brooke attempts to run away with her sister, Kat, in Chapter 5, her mother seems to need no explanation.I don’t know that when I was a child I fully understood the extent of how I was protecting my siblings, but I did know that I loved them and I didn’t want them to feel the way I did when I was abused. Randis: I think when you are in a position, as a child or adult, where you don’t have anyone to fall back on is when hard decisions need to be made. Why do you believe that you had the urge to protect at such an early age?

Throughout the book, Brooke repeatedly attempts to protect her siblings by absorbing much of the abuse herself.

She has written numerous local publications that brought awareness to domestic violence and child abuse.
